Did you know that taking advantage of your remaining dental insurance benefits for the year can actually save you hundreds of dollars? Most dental insurance plans allow participants a certain amount of benefits per year. Most commonly we see this in the $1000-$1500 range. This is the maximum amount of money your insurance company will pay towards your care in a given year.
What the insurance companies don’t go out of their way to tell you is that if you don’t use all those benefits, you lose them. Dental benefits do NOT carry over into the following year. It’s a use it or lose it situation.
Additionally, most plans have a deductible that must be met prior to the insurance company paying for any dental work you might need. Come January 1st, you will once again have to pay that deductible should you need any work done in 2018. If your deductible has already been paid for this year and you have outstanding work, you may be able to save on paying a deductible for next year if the work is done in 2017.
Lastly and probably most importantly, dental problems typically only worsen when treatment is delayed. What might only need a filling now could easily turn into a root canal and crown if put off for too long. This leads to more extensive and expensive treatment.
